The scores
Each vendor is scored on two plans, one for each kind of buyer. For low volume, such as overflow or after-hours cover, we compare the entry plans: KaiCalls Kai Backup ($10, ~20 calls) and Upfirst Starter ($24.95, 30 calls), as in our 10-service ranking. For a business that wants every call answered, we compare KaiCalls Kai Line ($79, ~170 calls), the plan we use on our other comparison pages, with Upfirst Premium ($59.95, 90 calls), the published Upfirst plan whose allowance is closest. Maximum score is 10.
| Service (plan) | Calls per $ | Overage | Booking | Flat per call | Human fallback | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KaiCalls (Kai Backup, $10, ~20 calls) | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 9/10 |
| KaiCalls (Kai Line, $79, ~170 calls) | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 9/10 |
| Upfirst (Premium, $59.95, 90 calls) | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 7/10 |
| Upfirst (Starter, $24.95, 30 calls) | 1 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 6/10 |
Scores use only what each vendor's own pricing page showed on 10 Oct 2026. Per included call, Kai Backup is about 50¢ ($10 for ~20), Kai Line about 46¢ ($79 for ~170), Upfirst Premium about 67¢ and Upfirst Starter about 83¢. Upfirst's Starter score matches its 6/10 in our 10-service scored comparison, criterion by criterion: 1 calls per dollar, 0 overage, 2 booking, 2 flat per call, 1 human fallback. In that ranking KaiCalls is scored on its $10 Kai Backup plan and gets 9/10, and Upfirst ties for second.
Verdict (checked 2026-10-10): KaiCalls is the pick. Kai Backup and Kai Line both score 9/10; Upfirst Premium scores 7/10 and Upfirst Starter 6/10. Both products book on your calendar, transfer callers to your team and count calls rather than minutes, so they score the same there. KaiCalls takes the points on calls per dollar and overage: it covers more calls for each dollar of plan price and bills nothing extra if you go over, while Upfirst bills every call over the allowance, from $1.50 on Starter to $0.70 on Scale. The scores don't settle the dollar cost at every volume. By our arithmetic from the published prices, Kai Backup costs less up to about 20 calls a month, Upfirst costs less from there to about 110, Kai Line costs less from about 110 to 170, and at 300 calls Upfirst Pro is cheaper than any KaiCalls plan that covers that volume. Upfirst also has a free trial on real calls and lists more calendars and languages. The scores don't measure how well a call is handled, so use Upfirst's free trial and KaiCalls' demo line to hear both.
Scoring rules
The same rules as our best AI receptionist ranking. Each criterion scores 0, 1 or 2, for a maximum of 10.
- Calls per dollar (the plan compared, billed monthly): 2 = $0.50 or less per included call. 1 = $0.51 to $1.00. 0 = more than $1.00, or no published allowance. Minute-based plans are converted at 2 minutes per call (100 calls is roughly 200 minutes); that is our simplifying assumption to compare call-based and minute-based plans, not a measured average. Plans counted in unique customers are scored per customer.
- No overage charge: 2 = no per-call, per-customer or per-minute charge past the plan's allowance. 1 = a published overage of $1.00 or less per extra call or customer, or $0.50 or less per extra minute. 0 = a higher overage, or no overage rate in the sources we checked.
- Booking included: 2 = the plan books appointments on your calendar at no extra charge. 1 = a paid add-on, or available but not itemized for that plan. 0 = not on the plan, or not published.
- Flat price, whatever the call length: 2 = the allowance counts calls or customers, so a long call costs no more than a short one. 1 = the allowance counts minutes. 0 = no published allowance.
- Human fallback: 2 = live human receptionists answer. 1 = the AI can transfer callers to your own team on that plan. 0 = no transfer on that plan.
Why these rules. We revised the rules on 10 Oct 2026, and KaiCalls publishes this site. They weight what a small business pays per answered call and whether the bill can climb, which is where KaiCalls is strongest. They don't score published setup time, free trials, languages or channels beyond the phone, and the comparison below says where each vendor does better on those. Every fact is sourced, so you can re-score with your own weights.
Upfirst's larger plans: Pro ($159.95, 300 calls, $0.75 per extra call) works out to about 53¢ a call and would score 7/10; Scale ($299, 600 calls, $0.70 per extra call) works out to about 50¢ a call and would score 8/10. At those volumes the KaiCalls plan is Kai Office ($349, ~800 calls, about 44¢ a call), which scores 9/10. Upfirst's annual prices ($20, $48, $128 and $240 a month) would raise Pro to 8/10 and change no other score; we score monthly billing, as the rules say.
Setup time isn't scored. Upfirst's pricing page says it trains your receptionist from your website and offers a free 30-minute onboarding call, and Pro and Scale add white-glove onboarding, but it doesn't publish a go-live time. KaiCalls doesn't publish one either.
What the same call volume costs
Upfirst bills every call over the allowance, so its price depends on your volume. These figures are our arithmetic from Upfirst's published plan prices and per-call rates, billed monthly; KaiCalls' figures are its published plan prices.
| Calls a month | Cheapest Upfirst option | KaiCalls plan |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | Starter, $24.95 | Kai Backup, $10 (~20 calls) |
| 30 | Starter, $24.95 | Kai Line, $79; Kai Backup covers ~20 |
| 50 | Starter, $54.95 ($24.95 + 20 extra calls at $1.50) | Kai Line, $79 |
| 90 | Premium, $59.95 | Kai Line, $79 |
| 110 | Premium, $79.95 ($59.95 + 20 extra calls at $1) | Kai Line, $79 |
| 170 | Premium, $139.95 ($59.95 + 80 extra calls at $1) | Kai Line, $79 (~170 calls) |
| 300 | Pro, $159.95 | Kai Office, $349 (~800 calls) |
KaiCalls' allowances are approximate ("~170 Kai-answered calls/mo"), and KaiCalls doesn't bill per call over them: if volume stays higher, it recommends the next plan and you can decline. At 300 calls a month Upfirst Pro is cheaper than any KaiCalls plan that covers that volume. Upfirst doesn't count spam or calls under 15 seconds toward your total.

Where Upfirst wins
- Cost from about 20 to 110 calls a month. Upfirst Starter is $24.95/month for 30 calls. KaiCalls' $10 Kai Backup covers about 20 calls, and its next plan is $79, so by our arithmetic from the published prices Upfirst costs less in dollars across that range.
- Trying it on real calls. Upfirst's 14-day trial needs no credit card and lets you forward real calls. KaiCalls has a free browser demo and a 30-day money-back guarantee, but live calls need a card and a paid plan.
- More calendars and languages. Upfirst books into Google, Outlook, Clio, Acuity, Calendly and Square, and lists 35+ languages. KaiCalls books through Google Calendar or GoHighLevel and supports up to four languages per line from ten.
- Junk calls are free. Upfirst doesn't count blocked spam, calls under 15 seconds or silent calls against your plan, and labels them in your call log.
- High volume and compliance. Upfirst Pro covers 300 calls for $159.95, less than KaiCalls' next plan up at $349, and its Custom plan offers BAAs for HIPAA-regulated businesses. KaiCalls' pricing page states no HIPAA terms.
Where KaiCalls wins
- Calls for the money in the middle. Kai Line covers about 170 calls for $79. Upfirst's closest plan, Premium, covers 90 calls for $59.95; at 170 calls it would cost $139.95 with per-call charges.
- A known bill. KaiCalls has no per-minute overage; it suggests a bigger plan and lets you decline. Upfirst bills every call over your allowance, from $1.50 on Starter to $0.70 on Scale.
- The lowest price to start. Kai Backup is $10/month for about 20 calls, with booking and transfers, if you only need overflow or after-hours cover.
- Follow-up after the call. KaiCalls lists two-way SMS and WhatsApp once your number is approved, automated follow-up and outbound callback campaigns. Upfirst lists texting during the call.
- Several businesses on one plan. KaiCalls includes unlimited secretaries on every plan. Upfirst charges $9.95/month for each additional AI agent.
